Are you on Facebook?
Asking friends if they're on Facebook is almost like asking for their phone number: Either way, you're hoping to use their information to find out what's new and interesting in their lives.
The same can be said for business and industry's use of social media to connect with customers and employees. In the rail world, Amtrak, CSX, Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific are some of the railroads that are onboard with Facebook and Twitter.
Still, not all businesses have jumped on the social networking bandwagon. Nearly half of all U.S. companies still prohibit employees from using social networking sites while at work, according to digital media leader Paula Berg's recent blog on The Huffington Post website. The nation's top 100 companies to work for, however, do use social media to interact with their workers and customers, Berg says.

As a retired locomotive engineer with 40 yrs service, I have seen many changes in the industry.
Cell phones and social media have probably been the biggest game changer in my life. It is a tool that still being processed. I think it as great potential, especially in safety.

Thanks for your comment, John. Your point about safety is well-taken. One of Operation Lifesaver Inc.'s goals this year is to increase its presence on social media outlets, such as Facebook and Twitter.
